What I Learned About Life From A Fly

One day a few years back, I was sitting in a restaurant, alone, trying to figure out what I should do about the various worries I had on my mind at the time. Funny thing is I don't remember exactly what was bugging me but I was bugged for sure, and I couldn't see my way out of it.

I remember thinking that maybe I wasn't trying hard enough. I mean really, if I'm feeling bad, it must be that I'm not putting enough energy into a solution. I felt STUCK! Ever had that feeling? Here’s some examples:

I can’t quit this job because……

I will end this relationship when this happens because……

I have to live here because……

I am unhappy and I can't do anything about it because…...

And then, I noticed this fly. He kept flying into the window. Then he'd fly at it harder and harder and harder until the poor little guy dropped dead. And I thought, geez if he just would have turned around he had the whole restaurant to fly around in.

I know it’s a corny story. But whenever I feel stuck, I think to turn around and consider that there’s the whole world out there. If you keep trying harder, at doing the same thing, that isn't working, aren't you just wearing yourself out?

Save yourself by allowing for the possibility that the only thing you're stuck in, is your way of looking at things. I often remind myself that there’s not one reason I shouldn't be happy right now, because I have choices. And guess what? I’m happy.

Next time you see a fly buzzing a window, you'll remember this story, won't you?
